Perez Hilton’s YouTube account suspended

by Christian Grantham - 1:54 pm December 18, 2007

Hollywood gossip Perez Hilton’s YouTube account has been suspended. Hilton says YouTube removed a Liza Minnelli video he posted on Monday because of copyright violation. Perez posted this video under a different account in response.

“I’m going to try not to get angry, or upset or raise my voice because thankfully I’ve already done enough of that without the camera rolling. My YouTube account was suspended. I’ve emailed YouTube, but I’ve yet to hear from any person there. I’ve just got an automated email from them.

Apparently, the Liza Minnelli video that I posted on Monday was in violation of someone’s copyright which is really confusing to me because the person who took the Liza Minnelli is a reader of my website gave me permission to use the clip and I still have mutliple emails from that person sending me the video and giving me permission to use it.

The only thing I can think of is someone at Liza Minnelli’s record company was upset that this video showing her being drunk or on drugs allegedly is out there and they wanted to get it removed from YouTube. Well, as a result my account was suspended.”

UPDATE 5:12p.m. - Now this video has been removed by YouTube with the following statement in its place: “This video has been removed due to terms of use violation.”

UPDATE 12-19-07 7:44a.m. - In part of the video I transcribed above (no longer available on YouTube), Perez Hilton claimed no one ever complained about copyright violations before the Liza Minnelli incident. This is not true. I alerted Perez Hilton on two violations prior to his account being suspended and got no response. One was for posting an entire segment of ABC’s daytime talk show The View. The other was for using Macy Gray’s music over a photo montage of his new dog.

UPDATE 12-20-07 - 2:49p.m. - Perez Hilton has returned to YouTube.

I was actually the first one to know about Perez being suspended I immediatly left the 1st video comment to his sock account that was also suspended after recieving only 20 total views and 2 video responses besides mine. after perez has his latest account also suspended my video remained up for probably 20 minutes before my own account was suspanded.
YouTube had recently contacted me and everything seemed to be fine.

How did you become the first link in a search for this? And if you aren’t the copyright owner why do you care? People post TV clips all the time and they are supposed to be warned before their entire channel is suspended. YouTube is attacking the wrong people.

pH, copyright law protects people’s hard work from intellectual pirates and keeps content creators in business. I’ve been involved in commerically licensed webcasting for a few years and made sure artists were fairly paid for my licensed use of their work online. It was hell, but many of us helped establish the current rates (through the Library of Congress’s Copyright Arbitration Royalty Panel) for use of licensed music online. I suspect many YouTube users will help the industry do the same thing for video content in the very near future.

I don’t know how I’m the top link for this story. Maybe it’s because this site is 9 years old or maybe I was the first blog to post about it. I don’t know.
