Quilting
My grandmother, mother and aunts have made quilts before. One of my favorites is one my grandmother gave to me 19 years ago. It was made of scraps of clothes she and other family members wore in the 60s and 70s.
I don’t know the first thing about making a quilt, but I caught an episode of Fons & Porter on NPT 8 today and started thinking about it again. I’ve never seen the show before.
In 2008, when many thought the year old recession could spiral into a depression, I thought about learning some practical skills like making butter and killing hogs. Quilting was on the list, but I was thinking more about food than anything.
I would love to spend 2010 making a quilt. I would want to do everything by hand (without a sewing machine), so my guess is that would take several hours spread out through the year if I decided to do it.
I don’t even know the basics, so I have to do some research and decide whether this is something I want to try to tackle.

You could totally do this, even by hand, even within a year. Ask your mom, but I’m pretty sure you just use a running stitch to piece the thing together and you stick your decorative stitches on at the end, if you decide the piece needs them.
I hope you do this. I’d love to see it come together.
I so want to. I haven’t talked to my mom about it, yet. She should be able to give me a sense as to how long it would take.
It’d make sense to start with something small, so you can develop your skill a little before undertaking a big project.
That’s a great idea, Rob. Hmmm. I guess I need to see what smaller things people make like quilts that i can do. That, or I could just make what I call a little chihuahua woobie of sorts, a blankie for tiny chihuahua puppies.
