Reaching out to the Nashville Resistance

I don’t know if you’ve seen this, but there are a couple of hundred or so “V” fans in Nashville who are not happy with WKRN delaying the premier of “V” last night. They’ve created a couple of Facebook groups, one of which is called the Nashville Resistance.

WKRN was scheduled to air Titans on 2 with Jeff Fisher at the same time as the widely promoted premier of “V,” and that caused a few early episodes of this new ABC sci-fi pilot series to be delayed until a little after midnight.

UPDATE 10-31-09: Program Advisory: WKRN will air ABC’s “V” on its main channel 2.1, November 4, 11 & 18 on a delay at 12:05am – 1:05am. It will not air on the NashvilleWX Channel as previously advised.

I joined both groups to link to helpful information on how to watch the show in Nashville. What you have to remember is these are some of the biggest fans of the show. I want to make sure they were served with helpful information. That’s about all I can do, but then this morning I thought of one other thing I could do.

I could be their Facebook friend. All it takes are a few clicks. Add as friend. Send request. Close. It’s the least I can do.

So, that’s what I did on today’s Morning Browser. I also shared a review of “V” that didn’t spoil any plot from YouTube user “uncledav10.” You can see them it here.

UPDATE 11-04-09: YouTube user “uncledave10″ was not happy that his video review of “V” was featured in this video, so I made it private, removing it from access online. Sorry for the inconvenience.

UPDATE 11-06-09: I replaced the privated video with one promoting “V.”

I have to say that I am only mildly curious about V because I’m afraid the network won’t follow through with it. (Still have raw wounds from “Invasion” years ago.)

But I absolutely HATE the Jeff Fisher show with every fibre of my being. It’s a sloppy-looking, low-rent Wayne’s World for the Football crowd. I wish they’d put it where it belongs. With all the other niche programming like farm reports and bass fishing shows.

10 times out of 10, I’d take aliens over football.

Has it occurred to you that these giant robotic overmuscled football players might just be the aliens?

And has it occurred to you they aren’t the biggest fans … How could they be when they haven’t even see the show yet? WKRN has done a disservice to it’s viewers. There are more then a few hundred. It’s just some are more vocal than others.

  5. November 6th, 2009 at 10:07 | #5

Jeff, I would argue the Nashville Resistance are some of the biggest fans of “V” in the Nashville area, and I bet they’d agree. I saw the premier of “V.” I suspect you have, too. I mean, it’s free on iTunes, and it aired on WKRN.

They may be the biggest fans now. My point being, before they saw the show they were only potential fans with an eagerness to see the show. However, I know many, many people who enjoyed the show who would have rather seen it when it was supposed to air. And they aren’t necessarily on FB. It’s not just facebook where this has been happening. You say hundreds of people complained. That’s true on facebook. it doesn’t include the people NOT ON Facebook. I can only assume WKRN knows it’s more than a few hundred.

To not admit WKRN made a massive mistake and has failed to serve the majority of their viewing audience is downright short-sighted. To say it aired on WKRN is true, but did it air when the majority of people could actually see it? DVR penetration in the US on average is ~17%. In Nashville it’s even lower (Dallas-FW leads the nation at ~25%). So, you’re assuming people will stay up late or record it. The reality is a vast majority of people don’t have the ability to do so (even assuming WKRN had the guide updated in time, which they didn’t on most providers).

Your GM @ WKRN sent me a message on Facebook arguing that they needed locally produced programming when ABC moves all media to digital distribution. Well, first if she was even halfway informed she’d know this isn’t likely to happen. When it does it would still include WKRN. But, if she WANTS it to happen, what better way than to anger thousands of people?

What is most displeasing is your need to make fun of people passionate for a show that had yet to air on the station that pays you. This is 1.) distasteful, rude and small-minded, 2.) shows a lack of knowledge who exactly where your paycheck comes from.

I can only assume you’d rather have dispassionate fans who don’t tune in to your station at all.

  7. November 6th, 2009 at 15:33 | #7

Jeffrey, I have been keeping a very close eye on everything said on Facebook and Twitter about this. I won’t presume to know what you do about WKRN’s ratings and what a majority of our audience wants to see, but we are in the business of serving our viewers.

What I hope to do as a member of the Nashville Resistance and the other groups who are upset with WKRN for not airing “V” at its scheduled time is to let them know when and how they can watch. I didn’t stay up late to watch the delayed airing on WKRN, nor did I record the show. I watched it for free from iTunes. That’s just one of the many ways some of our programs are delivered to meet the schedules of our viewers instead of expecting them to meet our schedules.

You are correct, for the most part, of DVR penetration. People without DVR often find themselves in the awful position of being stuck on our schedule. Luckily we’ve provided those and others free ways to watch the show on their own schedules.

Is there anything more you think I can do to make sure “V” fans can watch “V?”

    November 6th, 2009 at 16:31 | #8

Not you specifically no, there is nothing more *you* can do make sure we see V when we’re supposed to be able to do so. Except maybe pass the message up the line. I think your GM must be oblivious to the amount of anger that has been generated. Her responses (and WKRN’s in general) have been laughable. The contract and “local jobs” as an excuse is simply that an excuse, but not a reason.

It isn’t just Facebook, Twitter, etc. that have been lit. It’s a multitude of web-based sources including other forums, blogs, etc. There are more than a hundred people complaining. There is a very vocal group that stands in front of literally thousands that are upset. My point is that WKRN is turning a blind-eye to the problem, and causing a much large public relations problem then they’d have otherwise. WKRN can do what is *right* for it’s viewership; It chooses not to.

    http://latimesblogs.latimes.com/entertainmentnewsbuzz/2009/11/abcs-v-lands-with-big-bang.html

Why not delay the showing of The Jeff Fisher Show until the 9PM hour when “The Forgotten” is on? A relatively smaller audience (still larger than TJFS) is watching it. However, I am sure WKRN doesn’t want TJFS as a lead-in to it’s third place news. It’d still cause complaints, but not an uproar. It’d be a stream compared to this river.

What I DO NOT disagree with is the line: “…but we are in the business of serving our viewers.” What I DO disagree with is that WKRN is holding to that standard. WKRN is not doing justice to it’s viewing public.

What I do appreciate is your willingness to discuss it. What I didn’t appreciate was the almost off-handed denial that it is a problem and the fact you tried to joke about the almost feverish that many of us (myself included) have approached this. I realize you need to tow the company line, but WKRN needs to be more willing to listen to the issues at hand. Silence on their part is not helping the matter at all.

A honest answer and a mea culpa would solve this issue.

    @Christian Grantham
Christian - I understand that you exactly zero power to affect change in this situation. We don’t expect that, and frankly your affiliation with WKRN casts an air of disingenousness on your attempts to “help”. That said, thank you for posting, in a readily available place, alternate methods by which viewers can minimize the impact of WKRN’s impotence as an ABC affiliate.

What is absolutely in question (and the only statement with which I take explicit issue) is whether WKRN is in the business of serving its viewers. It would appear from all outside observation that WKRN is solely serviing itself in this case, in its stubborn adherence to a misbegotten contract. The contract cannot be cited as a solid reason because we have all seen its terms bent in the past when it suited the station. Further, WKRN has two channels and multiple time slots to work with. While it stands to reason that the main station with HD capability should be reserved for HD content (which the Jeff Fisher program is not), WKRN didn’t need to displace T2wJF. The NashvilleWX channel would have satisified a great many viewers - I am one of them. Failing that - almost ANYTHING could have been moved to the “death slot”. It defies reason that a NETWORK PREMIERE would end up there. “V” is the highest rated series premiere this season, on any network, and Nashville deserves to see it with the rest of the country whether WKRN believes that or not.

There’s not much you can do to help; outside of lending your voice to the protest (which you cannot do for obvious and unfortunate reasons), the only thing I think that you can contribute is to crank the condescension down a notch.

  10. November 6th, 2009 at 17:04 | #10

Jeffrey, no, our GM is not “oblivious to the amount of anger that has been generated.” I think you yourself said she’s been in touch with you directly, for example. What other places are you seeing anger that you believe I cannot or have not seen?

Roscoe, I’m sorry you are reading “condescension” in my effort to help. Did any of the information I provided online help you watch the premier of “V?”

  11. Roscoe
    November 6th, 2009 at 20:09 | #11

    @Christian Grantham
Actually, no - I’d devised my own plan by Tuesday, as I had no faith in WKRN’s impulse to do the “right thing”. I’m sure your info helped some folks, and I’m not calling you out on that - you’re being necessarily neutral. I’m committed to helping others in the same way, with an add-on: All the ABC you want, all the time, without the WKRN aftertaste. Not just “V”.

I’m curious though - do you have much contact with your GM? What can you tell us (that we don’t already know or assume) without betraying your allegiance? That’d be helpful. I’d appreciate it.

Hey I don’t care about where you can go tell us to watch it. I want to watch it on my nice TV at a decent time. I have to work really early in the mornings and I really do not feel like squinting on my small computer monitor to watch something and losing 4 hours of sleep to stay up till midnight to watch a prime time show. I have not watched the first episode still due to this fact!

Do you not understand that’s what we want! WE do not want to go watch it on youtube, hulu, etc.. because all of us do not own the greatest computers or have the greatest internet. And we shouldn’t have to wait for the series to come out on DVD to watch it on our tv! Just give us the show at A decent time!!! Not in the middle of the effin night!!! I don’t care if it’s after or before jeff fishers crap just as long as it’s A) A decent time slot b)On tv! If you can push back V to midnight I’m sure you could set all prime time TV back an hour. Or even move Jeff fishers show to another time slot easily..

Wayne, I do understand. I have a couple of very nice TVs myself, but I’m one of those people who watches more video content online and on my iPhone than on the bigger TVs. I’m part of the audience that is dramatically changing the way networks and local “TV stations” are delivering video content, and I didn’t miss the premier of “V.” I hope other local fans didn’t, either.

Because of the way I consume video content, I didn’t want the cost and value of the big TVs to go to waste for the few times I do want to watch them, so I added DVR technology. It’s only about $30 extra a year, or something like that - less than what you’d spend eating one night out of an entire year at a restaurant.

I knew I’d spend more than $30 worth of time worrying about what I missed on my nice TVs, so I weighed that cost against getting cheap technology added, like a DVR, and putting the TV on the same schedule as me, my computer and my iPhone. I would have paid that much alone to watch NPT’s National Parks series I recorded in HD.

But that’s just me. Others might not be able to afford that, or eating at a restaurant not even one night out of the year, and lucky for them they can watch it for free like I did. I’m not a big TV watcher, so I’m not sure if I’ll watch future episodes of “V,” but I’m glad I have options to catch it whenever I want without having to be at a certain place and time of someone else’s chosing. Thanks to technology, the days of other people controlling what we see and when they want us to see them are over.

    @Christian Grantham
Do you think that it will always be free on iTunes? After the premier, you’ll have to pay for it and Hulu doesn’t show it till Saturday.

  15. Lori
    November 10th, 2009 at 19:37 | #15

Here’s the thing Christian. You are condescending, and it is very off-putting. We understand that you work for WKRN so you will say whatever to make the company right and the “crazy fans” wrong. I’m glad to know that YOU have a couple of nice TVs, great. Wow, you have an iPhone? I guess that we’re not as cool as you, because you feel the need to brag about your iPhone.

Here’s the thing, Christian, you work for WKRN. The quality of WKRNs news broadcasting is on par with smaller cities like Jackson- no wonder WBBJ promotes on their website that they compete with the Nashville market. Oh yeah, and WBBJ doesn’t pre-empt network programming for a local sports show.

Also, your remarks shows that employees of WKRN believe that all viewers should have DVR capabilities. Guess what? All cable companies do not offer that capability. (You know, much like WKRN hasn’t upgraded their newscast like WTVF and WSMV.) So, I’m done with WKRN. I can’t really say that I’ll miss it. What sealed it? You. You are a representative of WKRN, and you treat us like you are better than us. You treat us as if we are unworthy of your time with our petty little grievance. WKRN allows it, so that shows what WKRN thinks of their viewers.

  16. November 12th, 2009 at 10:06 | #16

Lori, I’m sorry to hear that and hope you base your decision on the things people actually said instead of made up statements. As far as I know, no one here has said “all viewers should have DVR capabilities,” but if you can provide a copy of such a condescending statement, I will be happy to address that.

Also, I don’t believe Wayne saying he has a “nice TV” is condescending at all. Some people do and some people don’t. I happen to have two myself. Hopefully those with and without will find the information on how to watch “V” for free helpful, and hopefully they were able to watch it, with or without a nice fancy TV.

Were you able to watch it?

  17. Tyler
    November 12th, 2009 at 14:32 | #17

Christian: The trouble continues. Like most “V” fans with day jobs, I didn’t stay up until midnight to watch this week. I DVRed it and watched the following day. WKRN started “V” a few minutes late, and the final few minutes were cut off.

It’s now Thursday afternoon, and I still don’t know what happened. Was Bruce Willis dead the whole time? Was the Planet of the Apes really Earth? Did it all take place in the mind of an autistic child? I still don’t know.

This is bush league. If WKRN knows that they’re forcing viewers to DVR instead of watch live, please at least start it on time. Out of principle, I’m not going to pay $2.99 for it on iTunes. I shouldn’t have to.

If you could pass that complaint on the next time you’re hanging at the water cooler, I’d appreciate it.

    I am of peace. Sometimes.

I was searching for other Titans groups on Facebook and saw all of this. I had no idea something was getting postponed for the Titans show but so what. Do you know how many people in WKRN’s viewing area go to the games and go to the show at Opry Mills? Do you know how many advertisers pay for that local and dedicated audience? Compare that to your stupid Facebook group. We regularly fill a stadium and we want more local Titans coverage that we don’t get on ESPN. Your group’s V leader called for a flash mob over and over to please do something and got a grand total of ZERO people to show up and do anything. Pathetic do nothing cry babies. All you guys do is whine and talk about what you are going to do on Facebook about it and accomplish nothing. There is a reason WKRN has Titans on instead of some stupid V show. It’s because that’s what more viewers want. Call the advertisers all you want. They know more people are seeing their ads than they would if V was on. If WKRN postponed a Titans show we’d show you guys how to get a message across you lazy asswipes.

My guess is you are all 20 somethings who feel like a blog comment is a replacement for real action. Stop your whining, or pull your laptops out of your assholes and do something more than talk about it. Flood the station with calls. Make them remember the time their last decision cost them hours a day. Your stupid Facebook group isn’t making this decision cost them a single minute or a single dime. If making calls takes too much time away from you crafting your next blog comment manifesto, then good for the rest of us who are Titans fans.

    Sincerely,
    Get er done!

Christian, rather than argue about your condescension, I have a serious question. Have you ever considered a future in politics? Because you are wonderful about side-stepping questions, comments, statements, etc. Also, you know how you directed Tyler to let Michelle Dube how important the issue is to him? I notice that you didn’t warn him that she’s not replying to viewers anymore.

Here’s my problem with this situation. Anytime that I’ve ever had an issue with a TV station, I’ve emailed or called and the person I was directed to was personable and friendly and made me feel like they actually cared (granted, they might have had very good manners when dealing with viewers). I haven’t felt like WKRN actually cares about the concerns of around 400 viewers, and that’s just the one’s online that are complaining.

Also, to answer your question as to if I have watched V yet. I’ll admit that I have not. My first attempt at recording on my DVD recorder didn’t work and I haven’t found the time to watch it online. Especially with having to wait until the Saturday after it airs. It’s more trouble than it’s worth. Instead, I’ve been watching NCIS in it’s real 7pm timeslot. I wonder how I ever thought I could give up on NCIS? WKRN made me see the light!

    @Get er Done!

Yeah, “Get er Done,” I’m glad that you are not the average Titans fan. You do realize that a lot of the people upset over V’s pre-emption are Titans fans, right? I mean, if you think about it, you’re ridiculing the people that cheer for the same team that you do. However, you can be a Titans fan and not want to watch Jeff Fisher talk for an hour about a game that happened two days prior, pre-empting a new show that ABC has hyped for a long time.

But hey, what do I know?

(P.S. Christian, I take back what I said about you. This guy is condescending. Or just plain mean. I’m not sure which.)

Have a wonderful week everyone. I truly hope that the Titans win today and that Jeff Fisher has super exciting things to talk about on Tuesday night as he talks it up at Opry Mills. Hey, atleast I meant it when I said have a wonderful week and that I hope that the Titans win!

  22. November 16th, 2009 at 09:49 | #22

I wanted to take a moment and address “Get Er Done.” While I pretty much let people express themselves however they wish, I do appreciate guests treating each other with respect and refraining from name-calling. I do delete comments I feel venture into libel or slander (which has happened maybe a couple of times in 10 years). If I see individuals personally attacked others in this illegal manner, those comments will be removed. It’s not necessary to use that kind of language here.

Lori, No, I’ve never really thought about politics, but I do try to address questions people ask here about WKRN where I can help. Where I can’t I try to direct people to the person who can. I hope you aren’t viewing that as “side-stepping” or “condescending” and view it more as being helpful where I can.
