Notes on media use of Google Wave

During today’s Morning Browser, we explored Google Wave a bit more. @G_Wake suggested we search some of the public waves and later shared this Mashable link to a story on how newsrooms are exploring the tool.

Using Google Wave allows newsrooms to reach out to their audiences and invite their active participation on news stories. In the process, waves become a vehicle to create an engaged local community who can also play a role in the newsroom. That may redefine how news is gathered, reported and presented to its audience, blurring the boundary between newsroom and community bulletin board.

The Mashable article above illustrates collaborative uses for newsrooms I’ve thought of as well, but until Google Wave is open, using and embedding waves will be limited to those who have been invited to use wave. That’s something I’m watching closely.

The idea came up this morning to have weekly Morning Browser waves as a place for everyone to share links to stories and videos as potential content. The Morning Browser isn’t pre-produced. It’s produced live with interaction from participants, so Google Wave could also serve as a powerful tool and searchable archive of edited clips from that week’s sessions.

Here are a few things I’m looking at as I wrap my brain around this:
