My Christmas tree

My Christmas treeI think this sums up how I often feel about this time a year, a tiny tree bound and strangled by too many Christmas lights.

I got all kinds of cool suggestions on Twitter this week for USB-powered Christmas trees and lights.

I always think of these things too late every year, so I grabbed some LED lights and wrapped up this tree.

I also happened to live stream the whole process using my iPhone as a good first test of what the new Ustream Live Broadcast app can do.

Thoughts: I streamed for about 15 minutes from the last part of my commute all the way through decorating the tree in Studio A. I noticed Ustream chopped it all up into about 9 clips, all of which were various parts of the 15 minutes. That was weird. Another thing I noticed is it drained half my completely full battery. Ouch!

The next thing I’m going to test is using the features that record video onto the iPhone and allow you to upload it as a clip. I’ll let you know how that goes.

I saw a bit of your last stream. Do you think the reason Ustream breaks it into clips is that the connection fails for a few seconds and Ustream treats the reconnection as a new stream? That’s basically what happens on my DVR when the signal is momentarily interrupted.

You might be right. I’m going to look into it later. One way around it would be to not be live, record it locally to the iPhone and then upload it. The app has that option.
