Space beer costs $19 a bottle

December 3rd, 2009 Christian Grantham No comments

Yes. Space beer. The ever enterprising Japan Aerospace Exploration Agency is clearly on the same page the Russian government is with leveraging private partnership in space exploration.

The results: space beer. If you want a bottle it will cost you dearly. And why not? It was made in friggin’ space! What does NASA make in space we can eat? Nothing. For the billions we’ve spent, all we got is memory foam.

Here’s an excerpt from the Huffington Post:

The barley used to brew the beer was the result of a five-month mission on board the ISS to experiment with growing crops in space.

In addition to Barley, the ISS has also harvested wheat, lettuce and peas, and may try potatoes (for eating, not vodka) next.

Sapporo’s space beer, called “Space Barley” is selling six packs to 250 beer-drinkers, who will be selected through a lottery. A six pack of Space Barley is selling for around $115, or about $19 per bottle.
